Show Preview: Bon Iver

March 30, 2008

Ahhhh. In collaboration with SCOPE Productions, Mission Creek’s finest accomplishment of 2008: attaining one of the year’s most buzzworthy new acts to play on the festival’s concluding evening (Saturday, April 5th, 6:30 PM, at the Iowa Memorial Union). Justin Vernon, stage name Bon Iver, self-released For Emma, Forever Ago in 2007 and this album of masterful, earthy-sounding, contemplative and pleading folk tunes quickly garnered him much attention. Jagjaguwar picked up FEFA and gave it a proper commercial release back in January. Now, Vernon is getting huge praise from huge sources, like Pitchfork Media and The Onion A.V. Club. The album score on 85 on, marking a position of universal acclaim. Missing this show would be quite blunderous. Check out this YouTube-provided performance of FEFA semi-title track and standout “For Emma”If the succesful recruitment of Bon Iver for the Mission Creek Fest is a sign of things to come, than the organization is on the prowl in a great way, in the fast lane to Midwest prominence.

Props must go to SCOPE who did the wheeling and dealing with Bon Iver’s agent to get this show into Iowa City. Teamwork, yo, teamwork.
