KRUI Track of the Week = Sufjan Stevens’ “Too Much”

October 11, 2010

After going five years without releasing a full-length album, Sufjan Stevens is back. He released his All Delighted People EP on August 20 of this year, and tomorrow he will release his Age of Adz LP as well as kick off a month long tour of North America, playing some of the country’s most historic venues.

Age of Adz fuses the extremes of Sufjan’s back catalogue. The album perfectly melds Sufjan’s techno chaos that was Enjoy Your Rabbit (2002) and the orchestral folk theatrics of Come On Feel the Illinoise (2005) into a defined, coherent sound.

“Too Much” begins with Sufjan singing over clanging cymbals and mechanical-sounding beats, then builds to graceful orchestra and horn swells, embellished with vocal harmonies.

As surprising as his comeback may be, Age of Adz seems like a completely natural progression for Stevens’ musical career to take on. Be sure to stop in every week for KRUI’s Track of the Week!

Album Emphasis Tracks: 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 11
